Horse Movement and Gaits: A CD-ROM
*****
By Deborah White. Wind Shadow Media Productions, Inc., 805 Breen Drive, Champaign, IL 61820. Phone: (217) 398-4533 or e-mail: wsmp@pdnt.com. Web site: www.geocities.com/Eureka/Plaza/5511. $20.00 (shipping and handling included, Illinois residents pay 7.5% sales tax). Both Windows and Mac versions are available, but on separate CD-ROMs. Specify the version you want.

Perhaps one of the most difficult concepts to teach is horse movement. Traditional methods consisted of drawings in books that show each change of movement which I never did quite understand. Then there were videos that showed some movement, but none that showed a variety of breeds and most of the pause effects didn't isolate movement enough to learn what was needed. Most farriers I know aren't very confident discussing gaits and movement. Horse Movement and Gaits is the most complete and knowledgeable source for horse movement in the industry, and it's only the price of a trim!

Dr. Sheryl King, director of Equine Science Program at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Ill., recognized the difficulty of trying to teach movement and gaits. First, it's impossible to have access to all breeds and second, it is very difficult for students to watch a horse in normal motion and see all they need to see.

Deborah White was a student of Dr. King's and needed to complete her horse industry internship before she could graduate. Dr. King asked Deborah to make a CD-ROM that would effectively teach gaits. And she did a fantastic job.

What an incredible teaching and learning tool! This CD-ROM has over 40 movements, complete with hoofbeat sounds, footfall patterns, details about the gait, and a video of each gait. You can view the movement in full speed, slow motion, or frame-by-frame. Movements you can study are:
  • Backing
  • Canter
  • Collected movement
  • Extended movement
  • Fox trot
  • Gallop
  • Hackney
  • Halt
  • Leads
  • Pace
  • Paso
  • Tennessee Walker
  • Rack
  • Running walk
  • Slow
  • Turning around
Repetition is the key to learning. Now you can sit in the comfort of your own home and study in detail, over and over, until you truly understand gaits and movement. You will know and understand why backing is the same movement as a trot. You will know the answers to gait and movement questions for your American Farrier's Association Journeyman exam and you will understand them.

With a $20 price tag this is a must for every farrier with a computer. Remember you need to specify the version you want, Mac or PC. (Five stars in the professional farrier and the horse owner categories.)
